Sensor Products for Enterprises Creating Technological Opportunities in airborne Remote Sensing

Conveners: Conveners: Rolf Becker, João Valente, and Bethany Melville

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), or ‘Drones’ are rapidly emerging as a powerful tool for environmental monitoring and mapping. Within the last decade, public awareness of UAS has increased dramatically, especially with the arrival of new commercially available low-cost, ‘ready-to-fly’ systems, and the rapid advances in sensor technology. This session aims to bring together experts in the field of UAS remote sensing, industry practitioners and governmental agencies that aim to share their experiences and contribute to the airborne sensor technology state-of-the-art. This special session will finish with a round table to establish a collaborative network between the participants.

We invite contributions that address applications and case studies in environmental sciences, such for example:
• Precision agriculture and forestry
• Livestock management
• Vegetation mapping and monitoring
• Hydrological and topography
• Atmospheric monitoring
Topics include but are not limited to:
• Automation and robotics
• Novel sensing strategies
• Open-source tools
• Machine learning and Big data
• Successful technology transfers
• Challenges and open questions
• Legislations issues

Session Structure:

The proposed session will consist of two parts; presentations covering various applications of UAS research, and a round table discussion. The presentations will be selected so as to give a general overview of the scientific field, and a diverse view of applications. The round table session will be used to link together research and industry partners for future collaboration, and address concerns and questions regarding the usage of UAS.
