Biography
Prof. Dr. Johannes B. Ries is Professor and Head of the Chair of Physical Geography at the University of Trier. His research focuses on geomorphology and Earth surface dynamics, with a particular emphasis on experimental approaches to soil erosion, runoff generation, and the use of aerial photography and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for landscape process analysis. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Mediterranean regions, West Africa, and South Asia, studying how climate, land use, and topography interact to shape surface processes. In his teaching and research, Prof. Ries integrates field experiments, such as rainfall simulations and erosion studies on vineyard slopes, with modern remote sensing techniques to quantify and model environmental change. He also plays an active role in academic administration, chairing the Departmental Committee for Studies and Teaching. His publication record includes more than 250 scientific papers and collaborative works in geomorphology, hydrology, and environmental science, reflecting his long-standing contribution to the understanding of landscape evolution and process-based geomorphological research.
