Biography

Professor John Reid is Professor of Environmental Systems and Indigenous Knowledge at the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. His research explores how Indigenous knowledge systems can inform environmental governance, sustainability, and the development of innovative technologies for managing natural resources. He leads research spanning environmental digital twins, Earth observation, artificial intelligence, Indigenous data sovereignty, climate adaptation, and nature-based solutions, working closely with Māori communities, government agencies, primary industries, and international partners. Professor Reid also serves as a director and advisor across a range of research organisations, government agencies, and private sector companies, helping translate research into policy and practice. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand.  His work seeks to weave Indigenous knowledge with science to develop more equitable, resilient, and regenerative approaches to environmental management.
